K'gari and the Fraser Coast

beach drives, convoy tracks and a plane on the sand

I went to K'gari before Ashleigh arrived, on a 4WD group tour with two friends. I still remember the beach driving, the 4WD tracks in convoy, the snakes and monitor lizards, and camping with the group. A small plane landed right on the beach and took us up for a price I couldn't believe at the time. It was epic. This guide covers why we'd recommend a tour or a proper 4WD rather than a 2WD van, the permits you need, and whale watching in Hervey Bay.

2WD verdict

No, not in a 2WD van. Vehicles on K'gari must be high-clearance 4WDs with low range, and AWDs aren't recommended. Leave the van at Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay and take a tour; Luke went on a 4WD group tour.

Key points

  • 4WD only. High-clearance 4WDs with low range, with a vehicle access permit for every vehicle.
  • Cameras. 24-Hour number plate cameras are in use, so the details on your permit must be right.
  • Camping permits first. Buy them before you set up camp; they can't be bought from rangers on the island.
  • No caravans. Queensland Parks lists no caravan camping at its K'gari camping areas.
  • Be dingo-safe. Never feed wongari, stay in groups and keep food locked away.
Before you go. Always double-check that walks, falls, roads and attractions are open before you go, to avoid disappointment, and check current fees at the time of booking. Closures and prices can change at short notice.

Why not your own 2WD van

Our advice: do K'gari on a tour or in a proper 4WD, not in a 2WD van. Leave the van at Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, where the tours leave from.

You need a vehicle access permit before you drive on K'gari, in your own name, including in a hire vehicle. Vehicles must be high-clearance 4WDs with low range; AWDs aren't recommended. Barges run from Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach and from River Heads near Hervey Bay (Queensland Parks: vehicle access permits; Queensland Parks: K'gari getting there and getting around; Queensland Government: driving on K'gari).

Permits and camping

Vehicle access permits must be bought for every vehicle before entering the Fraser Island Recreation Area, and 24-hour number plate cameras are in use. Camping permits for its camping areas must be bought before you set up camp, and the booking number must be displayed at your site. Bookings open up to 12 months ahead, and it strongly recommends booking early for school and public holidays. Permits can't be bought from rangers on the island, and mobile reception can be unreliable, so buy before you arrive. Its camping areas list no caravan camping. Always check the K'gari conditions report before you visit (Queensland Parks: camping on K'gari).
K'gari is home to wongari (dingoes) — never feed them, stay in groups, and keep food locked away (Queensland Parks: K'gari dingo interactions).

Hervey Bay

Before and after K'gari

South: Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Byron Bay. North: Agnes Water and 1770, Airlie Beach and Cairns. The whole route is in our East Coast guide, from Sydney.

What to see on a K'gari tour

Day-use areas on the island include Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), Central Station in the rainforest by Wanggoolba Creek, Lake Allom, Lake Birrabeen, Lake Boomanjin, reputedly the largest perched lake in the world, and Waddy Point on the Eastern Beach drive (Queensland Parks: K'gari attractions and park alerts).
Park alerts for K'gari cover marine stingers, turtle nesting, the dingo rearing season and track conditions. Always check the alerts and conditions report before you book (Queensland Parks: K'gari attractions and park alerts).

Eastern Beach: Eli Creek, the Maheno and Champagne Pools

The Eastern Beach scenic drive is for high-clearance 4WDs with low range only, and you can only drive two hours either side of low tide, so it takes more than a day. Stops include the Eli Creek boardwalk (wheelchair accessible), the Maheno shipwreck, Champagne Pools (with a boardwalk and accessible toilets), Kirrar Sandblow and Rainbow Gorge. To protect nesting turtles, from 15 November to 30 March you can only drive north of Ngkala Rocks between 6am and 6pm. Check the conditions report before you go (Queensland Parks: K'gari Eastern Beach scenic drive).

Rainbow Beach: Carlo Sandblow
