The Gold Coast in a campervan

beaches, Surfers and the strip

We've spent time on the Gold Coast on our east coast trips, including Surfers Paradise. The coast is full of so many amazing beaches that you can't fail to find one, and if you're looking for shops, cafés and bars right alongside the sand, Surfers Paradise has you sorted. This guide covers the City's no-free-camping rules, where to stay in a van, parking and height limits, the patrolled beaches, and the theme parks and hinterland other travellers head for.

2WD verdict

Yes, the Gold Coast is fine in a 2WD van. The beaches, theme parks and hinterland national parks in this guide are all on sealed roads. The catch is size, not traction: the hinterland roads are steep, winding and narrow, the Green Mountains (O'Reilly's) road isn't suitable for RVs over 6 m, and multi-storey car parks have height limits that a high-roof van won't clear (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely, City of Gold Coast: Bruce Bishop Carpark, Surfers Paradise).

Key points

  • No free camping. It's illegal to sleep overnight in a vehicle parked in a public place, and officers patrol 7 days a week.
  • Book a park. The City runs 7 Gold Coast Tourist Parks, most of them right by a beach.
  • Big vans and parking. Vehicles 7.5 m or longer, or 4.5 t GVM or more, can't stop on residential or built-up roads for longer than 1 hour.
  • Check the height. Bruce Bishop Carpark in Surfers Paradise, for example, doesn't allow vehicles over 2.08 m.
  • Swim between the flags. The City's lifeguards patrol 28 beaches all year round.
Before you go. Always double-check that walks, falls, roads and attractions are open before you go, to avoid disappointment, and check current fees at the time of booking. Closures and prices can change at short notice.

Camping rules for vans

It's illegal to camp overnight in a public place and to sleep overnight in a vehicle parked in a public place (City of Gold Coast: report a problem, vehicles (illegal camping)). There's no free camping on Gold Coast beaches, roads and parks, and officers patrol public areas 7 days a week and fines may be issued (City of Gold Coast: camping area licence (no free camping)).

In practice that means a booked site every night you're on the coast. The beachfront car parks and esplanades aren't an option, whatever an old app review says.

Where to stay in a van

The City of Gold Coast runs Gold Coast Tourist Parks: 7 parks and 3 island campgrounds with powered and unpowered sites, including dog-friendly sites (City of Gold Coast: tourist parks). The mainland parks are Broadwater, Main Beach, Ocean Beach (Miami), Burleigh Beach, Tallebudgera Creek, Kirra Beach and Jacobs Well; the 3 campgrounds are on South Stradbroke Island (Gold Coast Tourist Parks: our parks). Check prices and availability on the parks' own site; they change with the season.
  • Book ahead for school holidays. The beachside parks are the obvious choice in a van, so expect them to fill early in peak periods.
  • Pets: Gold Coast Tourist Parks lists Kirra Beach and Jacobs Well as pet-friendly (Gold Coast Tourist Parks: our parks).
  • Apps: WikiCamps (WikiCamps Australia) lists the paid parks with user reviews and is useful for comparing prices. Inland, in the hinterland and the Scenic Rim, you may find quieter or cheaper paid options. A listing in an app doesn't make a spot legal, though: on the Gold Coast itself the City's rules above still apply, so check the signs and the council rules wherever you stop.
  • In the national parks: The Settlement in Springbrook is the only camping area in that park, and its sites suit tents, camper trailers and campervans, but not caravans. Permits are needed and fees apply (Queensland Parks: Springbrook camping, Queensland Parks: Springbrook FAQs, Queensland Parks: camping bookings).

Parking and height limits

Heavy and long vehicles must not stop on a residential road or in a commercial built-up area for longer than 1 hour. Heavy means a GVM of 4.5 t or more; long means 7.5 m or more, including any load or projection (City of Gold Coast: safe and legal parking). Traffic Areas have time limits on every street inside the signed boundary (City of Gold Coast: safe and legal parking).
Bruce Bishop Carpark in Surfers Paradise doesn't allow vehicles over 2.08 m high, or trailers (City of Gold Coast: Bruce Bishop Carpark, Surfers Paradise). SkyPoint lists free undercover parking via Hamilton Avenue, but doesn't give a height limit, so a high-roof van should plan on street parking or a ground-level car park (SkyPoint: visit and opening hours).

The beaches

The City of Gold Coast's lifeguards patrol 28 beaches all year round and 42 in peak season and school holidays (City of Gold Coast: lifeguards). Burleigh Heads has 1 patrol location, Tower 18, patrolled 8am to 5pm every day, all year round, and Coolangatta's Tower 3 has the same hours (City of Gold Coast: Burleigh Heads beach, City of Gold Coast: Coolangatta beach). Swim between the red and yellow flags (Surf Life Saving Queensland: flags and signs).

The hinterland in a van

The roads to the Springbrook plateau are steep, winding and narrow, and they stop caravans getting up there, and there's no through road to New South Wales from the plateau (Queensland Parks: Springbrook, visiting safely, Queensland Parks: Springbrook FAQs). The steep, narrow roads up Tamborine Mountain from Nerang and Canungra are unsuitable for buses, trailers, caravans and trucks (Queensland Parks: Tamborine, visiting safely).
For Lamington, the Green Mountains road is unsuitable for RVs longer than 6 m and anything towing a caravan or camper trailer (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely). If your RV is longer than 4 m, book accommodation that suits your vehicle (Queensland Parks: Lamington, things to do). There's no fuel on the Lamington Plateau; fill up in Canungra or Nerang (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely).

Best time to go and drive times

The coast averages 245 fine days a year, with most rain in summer (December to February). Winter (June to August) is generally sunny and dry, at 11 to 21°C, and the hinterland is cooler and wetter all year (Experience Gold Coast (Destination Gold Coast): travel tips and climate). Lamington's wet season usually runs from November to March (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely).
  • From Brisbane: about an hour south on the M1 Pacific Motorway in normal traffic, longer at peak times and on Friday afternoons. Check QLDTraffic: road conditions before you go.
  • From Byron Bay: Byron is just over the border in New South Wales, roughly an hour's drive from Coolangatta.
